Soaking in the Sunshine @ Surajpur

18th August 2012: All bags were packed and I was suddenly traveling to a district whose name i had only heard a couple of days back - the Surajpur district in North Chattisgarh! After our two day state orientation in Raipur, we were asked to report to our districts by 21st August (Monday being a holiday for Eid). But, having no place to stay in Raipur, we decided to leave for our districts on Saturday itself. With the other five in our group having departed to their districts in South Chattisgarh by busses, i took my train to Surajpur with great uncertainty of what i was about to discover. The train route to Surajpur is mesmerising - and no less so than the Rayagada - Koraput Route or even the Konkan route sans the tunnels. Bright green paddy fields with dark green trees dotting the landscape meet the eyes for as far as they can wander. And you immediately fall in love with the place that invites you to its fold with such a view early in the morning. I landed in Surajpur on  ...

Image
A trip to Java and Bali Islands in Indonesia and KualaLumpur in Malaysia So after a quick trip to Himachal Pradesh with friends, it was time to pack up bags for a tour to distant lands - Indonesia and Malaysia for a 9 day trip (14/4/2011 - 22/4/2011). Here are the highlights of our amazing trip!!! Reaching There: With bags packed and all documents (visas, passports and air tickets) ready, we left from Mumbai CSIT for Surabaya (East Java) via KualaLumpur. The 10 hours travel time (including transit time at KL) left us a bit tired and drained but we had the entire trip to look forward to. We checked in at Family Guest House in Surabaya at around 1 AM local time. Tiger spotting at Taman Safari 2 Day 1: Surabaya and Batu Sleeping well to compensate for the Jet Lag, we left the hotel at around 11 AM to visit around Surabaya and nearby areas. Our first destination was the House of Sompoerna in Surabaya. It is a cigarette production facility set up in 1932. The adjoining museum give...

The Economics of Bribing

A story about how a conscientious thin boy * was compelled to bribe a TTE...and why you can do nothing about it! It was the last day at college and the thin boy, like all others, was pretty excited about it. The term had been a long and hectic one and the bag packing was supposedly the last part of it. The thin boy was looking forward to catching his train to a'bad at 6:00 am next morning. Mom awaited his arrival with her own list of food items that she was going to prepare over the week. The night went on quite nicely with goodbyes and hugs all around. After all, it would be some time before he would meet his pals again. As had been his practice, the thin boy did not consider booking a ticket before-hand. The journey was a short one and the general compartment wasn't all that crowded early in the morning...and above all that, booking a ticket on the internet required effort! Feeling tired and sleepy, the thin boy decided to have a nap leaving the last part of the packing f...

Rain,Raining,Rained...Manipal III

There's a small pathway going down towards those mountains passing through those jungles obviously...and thats what i was going to follow today.... Small rain drops kept falling on the top of our hill (thats where our college is located ...if u wish!!!) only to coalesce to form bigger drops and then small streams running down along the road from the top, taking with it stones and pebbles, some big some small,at nature's beck and call. As the amount of rainfall grew,so did the volume of water in these streams...which wud then go on to become bigger and bigger....sometimes, forming new channels to go down by the shortest route, and sometimes just following the broken gutters that were supposedly made for this purpose. Well, these small streams would then meet streams coming in from other directions to form Rivulets (thats what they are called....i think...) and keep growing in size....only to meet the river flowing somewhere in the midst of the jungles in the valley below...an...
